Resurrecting Easter, John Dominic Crossan

Resurrecting Easter: How the West Lost and the East Kept the Original Easter Vision
John Dominic Crossan

look at the last page of this, the back page endorsements, look what John Shelby Spong wrote:

Okay, I used to have a reading balance plan, it worked great.  But then I've had to let go of it and read all these sorts of books.  And there are more after this.  Need to do this.  But then after, no more.

This book is really interesting.  Points out that in the Gospels there are no direct accounts of the Resurrection, only Resurrection appearances.

Where as there are detailed accounts of the Baptism, Transfiguration, and Ascension.

But there is much detailed art of the Resurrection.  And originally it was Jesus rising and bringing everyone else with him, like holding each Adam and Eve by the wrists.  This is on the cover of the book.  So the Resurrection was already universal.

Richard Rohr delayed publication of his newest book on account of Crossan.

So some how in the West this universal understanding was lost, but it has remained in the West.

So I cannot spend too much time with this book, loaded with art works pictures, but I do need to extract the key ideas from it.

It also clarifies on the copy write page:

NRSV Bible copy write 1989, Division of Education of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA.

And then we know that the I AM A CHRISTIAN movement then went on the make their own translation, NIV, an idiotic translation, to oppose NRSV and RSV.

The Crossans talk about this, Resurrection Gate, Red Square, Moscow.

Stalin had the building demolished in the 1930's to make way for large military vehicles for parades.  But in 1990 it was rebuilt to exacting detail.

Notice the two portals, and then in the center a painting.

This is the painting or mosaic right here, it faces in towards Red Square.  It is an example of that the Crossans are calling the Universal Resurrection.

Here from their book, page 1, St. Ambrose of Milan, speaking of the death of his brother Satyrus, maybe the year 379,

"If Christ did not rise for us, then he did not rise at all, since he had no need of it just for himself.  In him the world arose, in him heaven arose, in him the earth arose.  For there will be a new heaven and a new earth."

They also draw upon:

Anastasis : the making of an image / Anna D. Kartsonis (1986)

Actually it would be very hard to summarize this book, dates covering 1000 years, and covering Christianity of both the East and the West, and the politics which influenced them.
